Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues Analysis

My Chosen Song

I have chosen the song ' Great Day' by Paul McCartney from the album 'Flaming Pie'. This song does not already have an existing music video which gives me a blank canvas to work with.
When you're wide awake
Say it for goodness sake
It's gonna be a great day
While you're standing there
Get up and grab a chair
It's gonna be a great day

And it won't be long, oh no
It won't be long, it won't be long no no
It won't be long, it won't be long oh no
It won't be long, it won't be long ooh yeah

Ooh, ooh, yeah
Gonna be a great day

And it won't be long, oh no
It won't be long, it won't be long no no
It won't be long, it won't be long oh no
It won't be long, it won't be long oh

When you're wide awake
Say it for goodness sake
It's gonna be a great day
While you're standing there
Get up and grab a chair
It's gonna be a great day

Brief Specification and Chosen Ancillary Text

For A2 Media Studies I am required to compose an Advanced Portfolio in which I have the option of selecting one from an array possible briefs.

For my own personal brief specification, I must construct a promotional package for the release of an album, including a music promo video, together with two of the following options:
  • A website homepage for the band
  • A cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
  • A magazine cover advertisement for the digipak

I have chosen to create a digipak and magazine cover advertisement.

Transition Task Evaluation

1) What did you find the most challenging and why?
I found editing the music video and getting the timing correct the most challenging. This was especially difficult as my group did not have the correct facilities prepared (e.g. the mp3) so we found lining the clips up with the track very challenging and time consuming. Eventually we managed to do it to an acceptable standard that we were all pleased with.

2) What will you do differently when you make your A2 product next year?
In order to avoid the situation of not having the equipment in time and make everything run more smoothly when creating my next music video I will make sure to be prepared and organised; however I will not need to rely on other group members which will make things easier as I can trust myself to bring in the correct files and equipment.

3) How has doing this task helped you and why? What have you taken away from this experience?
I have realised how time consuming editing the video is and how difficult of a task it is when you try editing without the mp3 track. I also noticed the importance of using a tripod and getting the correct framing as it makes the final product look more professional.

4) How successful was your product? Why do you think it was successful or unsuccessful?
I think my product was successful. The performer was good and it looked very similar to the original video. The lip syncing matched with the song perfectly and looked seamless.

5) How do you feel about developing to A2 level now you have completed this task?
I feel more confident about progressing to A2 as I have more of an understanding of time management and how I need to prepare in order to make the creation of my music video run as smoothly as possible.

6) What do you like most/least about your final product?
I like the editing the most as it matches up with the original video. I dislike the jump near the beginning of the video which I did not have enough time to re-film.

Lyrics to the Section We Will be Re-creating

Hey, I can be the answer
I'm ready to dance when the vamp up
And when I hit that dip get your camera
You can see I been that bitch since the pamper
And that I am that young sis the beacon
The bitch who wants to compete and
I can freak a fit that pump with the peep and
You know what your bitch become when her weave in
I just wanna sip that punch with your peeps and
Sit in that lunch if you're treatin'
Kick it with the bitch who comes from Parisian
She know where I get mine from and the season
Now she wanna lick my plum in the evenin'
And fit that tongue tongue d-deep in
I guess that cunt gettin' eaten
I guess that cunt gettin' eaten
I guess that cunt gettin' eaten
I guess that cunt gettin' eaten
I guess that cunt gettin'...

I was in the 212
On the uptown A
Nigga you know what's up
Or don't you?
Word to who made ya
I'm a rude bitch nigga
What are you made up of?

Prop List for Music Video Re-creation

Shot by Shot Analysis of Our Chosen Music Video

To be able to successfully recreate the music video, I have gone through and taken a screen shot every time it changes and for how many seconds it's on this. This means there will hopefully be accurate timing and be able to do the same in filming.
The first 4 images are establishing the setting of the music video, and helps create an understanding as to where it is. They flash onto each other quickly so it doesn't get boring.
Some more parts to the videos, and introducing everyone who features throughout, in short bursts at a time.

The video continues similarly to this, going from a close up shot to an extreme close up shot and back and forth. It fits in with the rhythm of the song. I think it also emphasises the meaning of the song, which is quite rude when uncensored! Focusing on the mouth.

Preliminary Task

Preliminary Task

Preliminary Task - 1 Minute Recreation of a Music Video
For the preliminary task I am in a group with Rachel, Josh and Will from my media class. We are going to be recreating the first minute of the music video for 212 by Azealia Banks.

Initial Ideas

Initial Ideas
In our group we searched for many music videos in order to find one which we really liked. All of the videos have a lot of different types of editing, including our final choice which is 212 by Azealia Banks. The video is in black and white which also helps us experience changing the colour in editing.

AS - A2 Transition Brief

Transition Brief

In order to prepare for your A2 Media Studies coursework- The Advanced portfolio, you need to:

-Work in a group of 3 or 4 people to plan and produce a reconstruction of a minute from an existing music video.
-Set up your individual A2 Coursework blog and choose your coursework brief
-Gather and evidence research into the conventions of your chosen brief over the summer starting with codes and conventions of your media form with examples, and also the genre of the text you intend to produce. (i.e. Music Video conventions and Rock Conventions).
